![]() | Saving Private Ryan (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $2.32 I don't care what people think, and I know it is on everybody's lists but its really that good. The opening D-Day scene was and still is a breakthrough in modern war cinema. The street to street fighting at the end is disturbing and realistic as hell, because war is hell
![]() | Band of Brothers
Buy new: $41.99 / Used from: $22.49 Yeah I know, its a TV show but its really really good in what it shows and that is the toughness of Paratroopers in combat during WWII. Episode 2's D-Day paratrooper drop behind enemy lines is breathtaking and as stunning as the opening D-Day beach scene in Saving Private Ryan.
![]() | We Were Soldiers
Buy used from: $1.67 This is Epic in scope and imagery. Whether you love or hate Mel Gibson, this is truly the most brutal film about Vietnam. I also absolutly love the side-story about the letters going home to inform the wives of their husbands deaths, rarely do you get that real impact of the consequences of war in a movie.
![]() | Black Hawk Down (Unrated Extended Cut)
Buy new: $13.47 / Used from: $1.60 Get the extended version, things make a little more sense. I actually make it a point to tell my class about this battle because of this movie. Modern Warfare in all its bloody glory. Truly riveting and engaging from start to end. The danger feels real and so do the heroics, it is truly a must own by anyone who claims to be a war movie buff.
![]() | Glory (Special Edition)
Buy new: $14.58 / Used from: $1.09 Still one of the greatest war films ever made and just as powerful now as it was when I first saw it in the theater. The assault on the Confederate Fort by the African-American Regiment at the end of the film is a bloody hell but it carries a powerful signal to the valor and cost of men fighting against terrible odds.
![]() | Tae Guk Gi - The Brotherhood of War
Buy new: $12.23 / Used from: $3.58 When I watched this movie my jaw almost hit the floor. Wow. What a truly realistic film from South Korea about the Korean War, which in America has pretty much become a forgotten war. The combat scenes are stellar and filmed on the same par as Saving Private Ryan. Yes, sometimes the dialogue is little dopy, but I blame it on the translation. Still, it is a serious must have for war movie buffs.
![]() | Braveheart (Two-Disc Special Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $7.49 / Used from: $4.44 Yes, another movie that is on everybody's lists. However, the medieval combat portrayed in all of its brutal fighting is still a staple that every ancient war movie tries to copy. Yes, there are alot of closeups on Mel's face, but people get shot in the butt and stabbed in the face!! Get it if you dont own it.
![]() | Gladiator (Three-Disc Extended Edition)
Buy new: $28.49 / Used from: $8.47 Yeah, I know I know, its not very historically accurate but I dont care. The opening battle scene of the Romans facing off against the Germanic tribes is epic. The opening battle, the gladitorial fights and Russell Crowes spot on performance are somethings that most movies about ancient times try to copy (along with Braveheart).
![]() | Full Metal Jacket
Buy new: $5.99 / Used from: $2.34 This is a classic that most people already know and love but I had to include it. The boot camp scene at the beginning is what most people get excited about. But, step back and look at the time in Vietnam and you will see a great development of urban city fighting during Tet, which shows the bloody complex problems of fighting the Vietcong building by building.
![]() | The Pacific
Buy new: $45.99 / Used from: $21.95 Many people had problems with this series. I think it was because they were expecting Band of Brothers 2. I actually like that they switched up the plot to be completely different then BOB. The Battle scenes are awesome and intense. Episode 5's Pelileliu landing is especially riveting. Most of the events are 100% true and its the first real depiction of the Pacific theatre of WWII.
![]() | The Lost Battalion
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $9.76 Yes it was a TV movie and yes it sometimes feels like it, but A&E showed some real guts in producing a movie that shows the reality of the American experience in WWI. Even though it was a TV movie, they really do an awesome Saving Private Ryan type camera-work through the movie to thrust you head first into the bloody madness of trench and forest warfare. Get it.
![]() | 9th Company Collector's Edition (Original Language and English)
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $18.36 This is a Russian film that shows realistically the carnage and frustrations of fighting the Russian-Afghanistan War. While the events in question may not be entirely true, the overall feel of what the War was like is full on in your face because it has scenes that rivals Black Hawk Down and We Were Soldiers. Deal with the subtitles and get it, if you are a serious war movie buff.
![]() | Kingdom of Heaven: Director's Cut (Four-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $19.37 IF you are going to watch this, I want to stress that you only want to watch the EXTENDED CUT of this. Do NOT watch the shorter version. The extended cut is way bloodier in depicting ancient warfare and the plot is WAY better developed. The siege of Jerusalem is enormously stunning in its chaotic bloody carnage. This is the version that should have been released in the theater's.
![]() | Master and Commander - The Far Side of the World (Widescreen Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $28.99 / Used from: $2.23 Besides having fairly accurate Napoleonic War ship-to-ship combat twice!!!, the rest of the movie is awesome in presenting the historical life of people living during this time. But the fighting is brutal and in your face for a PG=13 movie and I still love the sound the cannonballs make as they shriek around the room via surround sound.
![]() | Gettysburg / Gods and Generals
Buy new: $6.58 / Used from: $0.50 Yes both movies are really loooonnggg. But what else you got to do? The battle scenes in both movies are drawn out and brutal. I prefer the way the battles are filmed in Gods and Generals but like the plot development in Gettysburg better. Still, these are both top of the line films about the Civil War. Get them both
![]() | Memphis Belle (Snap Case)
Buy used from: $3.00 Great modern classic on WWII air war that was made at a time when war films were not all the rage. The whole cast is fantastic and the air combat is gripping and heartpounding, made even more so when you realize that this was made at a time before CGI
![]() | Hamburger Hill (20th Anniversary Edition)
Buy new: $9.01 / Used from: $3.27 Another in your face brutal film about the Vietnam War. This should go hand in hand with We Were Soldiers. This got ranked lower because of one scene that looks really fake. However, the rest of the movie is a rollercoaster of war action as the American forces try to reach the top of the Hill only to suffer attrocious casualties by the Vietcong. Watch it.
![]() | Assembly
Buy used from: $89.88 This is China's answer to Saving Private Ryan and Tae Guk GI. The battle scenes are incredibly realistic and relentless to the core. It ranks lower because of the second half of the movie which is a little bit slower and underdeveloped. But, this is a great war film that depicts the intense struggle of the Chinese Civil War and its communist takeover aftermath.
![]() | Blessed By Fire
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $5.04 Another top notch foreign war film. This one takes you right into the Falkland War and what it was like to be on the losing side of that war. The night battle scene is jaw dropping and right up there with Black Hawk Down in its stark bloody choas. Deal with the subtitles. This one's plot is a little bit longer developed then the other films but the above battle makes it all worth it.
![]() | Platoon (Special Edition)
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $1.15 Yeah, its a little overrated but its still a powerful film. This is more of an Anti-Vietnam War movie, but it has some stellar battle scenes that showcases the frustration of the soldiers trying to fight this war. Two big personal beefs with the film doesn't move it up higher.
![]() | Letters from Iwo Jima (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $7.60 / Used from: $1.22 Amazing WWII Pacific theatre film from the perspective of the Japanese. This shows the brutal reality of Iwo Jima, the 2nd bloodiest battle for American forces in WWII. It sure was no picnic for the Japanese and this film really brings home the idea of honor and sacrifice expected of the Japanese soldier, even though they know they will lose.
![]() | Shot Through the Heart
Buy new: $8.73 / Used from: $4.00 This was a movie that I picked up based on peoples recommendations. Its about the Bosnian War and it is just a plain punch to the face in how it accurately presents what went on over there. It shows all the carnage and inhumanity of the conflict that turned friend against friend. Watch it and be blown away.
![]() | Das Boot - The Director's Cut
Buy new: $11.73 / Used from: $2.64 This is a classic WWII movie that showcases the claustrophobic terror of submarine warfare. The plot is longer but the characters draw you in and the fact that it is shown from the German perspective also thrusts it into greatness.
![]() | Downfall [DVD]
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $4.00 This is a different type of war film. This is about the last days of Hitler and the Third Reich during WWII. There is not a lot of battle scenes but the intensity and insanity by the actor portraying Hitler is mesmerizing. What makes it even more awesome is that it is a German film, which for them to take on such a touchy subject is just short of stellar.
![]() | Stalingrad
Buy used from: $12.50 Another German movie that is brutal, relentless and in your face. This is the German perspective of the bloodiest battle of WWII. You will have to watch subtitles but its worth it. One problem I have with it is that there seems to be some plot holes throughout the film. However, by the end you will feel a lot of sympathy for the Germans as they slowly freeze to death.
![]() | Enemy At the Gates : Widescreen Edition
Buy used from: $2.47 This should be the companion piece for the German movie Stalingrad. However, this is the Russian perspective of the bloodiest battle of WWII. Even though its from the Russian perspective, the actors are English speakers, but it is still ferocious and brutal. Watching these two movies together will give you an excellent feeling of what this battle was and why it was awful.
![]() | The Winter War (TALVISOTA) : Uncut (70 min. longer than U.S release) 2-DISC, Special Outer BOX Slip-Case Edition, [IMPORTED For ALL-REGIONS, NTSC]
Buy used from: $19.99 This is absolutly jaw dropping in scale and scope. A little known battle that took place between Finland and Russia as WWII was breaking out. The battle scenes are relentless and brutal. What doesn't rank it higher is some confusion over plot that is never really developed and some dopey dialogue which I blame on translation. However, war buffs should get this without delay.
![]() | The Last of the Mohicans (Director's Expanded Edition)
Buy new: $18.75 / Used from: $3.20 This is based loosely on historical facts about the French and Indian War. The romance feels right and not just plopped in. The massacre of the British formation and the siege by the French against a British fort is really intense and massive in scope. Bloody exciting good times that gets the blood pumping. Many people have this, but its great stuff and should be included on this list.
![]() | Miracle at St Anna (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $9.73 / Used from: $1.55 Some people thought that the plot of this one was too confusing. I thought the plot was well developed, which gave it tons of emotional impact. The massacre of the Italian village was heartbreaking and difficult to watch, but that's what made it so powerful. It was good to see a well-developed movie about African-American's contribution to WWII.
![]() | My Boy Jack
Buy new: $10.49 / Used from: $9.93 This is a well-developed BBC film that tells the true story of Jack Kippling's involvement in WWI. Those who like wall-to-wall action will not like this movie. But, those who like plot development and character development will feel emotional despair while watching the hardships and horrors that Jack, strongly portrayed by the Harry Potter actor, suffers in training and in the trenches.
![]() | Zulu Dawn
Buy used from: $9.94 Yeah, this is a little bit more dated then my other movies but it still blows me away. The Battle of Isandlwana is epic and while it doesn't show alot of blood it does showcase the desperate struggle for survival by the British against an overwhelming force of African Zulu warriors in most of the last half of the film.
![]() | A Bridge Too Far
Buy new: $7.49 / Used from: $0.50 This is also a little bit more dated, but it is amazing and intense, because it lays out the complexity of the failed Operation Market-Garden by the allies during WWII. The British tank battle against German 88's and infantry is so massively stellar that I show it to my classes to get their blood pumping when we talk about WWII. Its a classic for good reason, get it.
![]() | Blood Diamond (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $1.59 While this is heavily rooted in fiction, the background behind it is not. Conflict diamonds and the bloody civil wars by feuding warlords in Africa makes this compelling and engaging to watch. The fact that this is one of Leo's best acted movies and that it is brutal and unflinching in its depiction of an African country tearing itself apart make it a must have for serious war buffs.
![]() | The Beast
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $2.70 This unexpected surprise realistically depicts the horrible struggles of guerilla warfare from both sides of the Russian-Afghanistan War. The use of a real Russian tank and the battle scene at the beginning makes it a must own. However, you need to deal with a slower build up of plot and the fact that the "Russians" speak only English to really enjoy this.
![]() | Generation Kill
Buy new: $23.99 / Used from: $16.00 Another TV series developed by HBO about the current Iraq War invasion. While it may not have alot of combat scenes, when it does show them, they are pretty intense and as well done as Black Hawk Down and 9th Company. What I really like about this is that it really gives you a good sense of what soldiers in the army deal with in Iraq without becoming too political.
![]() | No Man's Land
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $1.08 A stellar foreign film depicting the brutality and stupidity of the Bosnian War. This is another one that if you are seeking wall-to-wall action you are going to be disappointed. However, the plot development and character build up is massive and pleasing. Plus, the ambush at the beginning is a well-done bloody surprise that makes this worth owning.
![]() | The Hurt Locker
Buy new: $8.23 / Used from: $2.85 While I do think this film is highly overrated, it does have some exceptionally well-done moments to warrant its inclusion onto my list. The opening and closing scenes and the especially awesome sniper scene makes this a modern day war classic. However, there are some slow and underdeveloped parts that makes this movie about the current Iraq War lower on my list. Sorry, but its the truth.
![]() | Admiral (2008, Russia)[all-region DVD, English Subtitles]
""A Russian film about WWI and the Russian Civil War. This is truly shot incredibly well and the acting is stunning. Yeah, you've got to read subtitles but the opening naval battle scene is jaw dropping. There is a love story, but it is integral to the plot and not just thrown in there like so many other war movies that feel its necessary to add. Think of it as a modern version of Dr. Zhivago.""
![]() | Rough Riders
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $6.53 And another movie about a war that Americans don't remember: the Spanish-American War. Some of the dialogue and music is too macho and cheesy at times but Tom Berenger is spot on as Teddy Roosevelt and the fights through the Cuban jungles are gripping and intense. The charge up San Juan Hill is as superb action as it gets. Check it out.
![]() | Passchendaele
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $2.79 Great Canadian film about their huge contribution to WWI. Many people complain about the dopey love story and usually I would agree with them, but in this film I feel like it actually worked. The battle scenes are brutal and filmed with bloody flair. Much more developed in plot then my other films, but like Blessed With Fire and Admiral, the battles pay off big.
