4Good Recovery Drink
By James T. Mcduffie
I always get fed up reading other reviews that don't help me figure out if I want to buy a product or not, so I figured I'd write one on a product that works for me.

The P90X Results and Recovery shake is a good combination of after workout Protien, Creatine, and Amino-Acids. What does this mean? It means that it has all of the things that every extreme athelete is looking for after a solid workout.

I'm a health nut, and I was already a body builder before I started the P90X system. While my normal workouts were tough, they never really pushed me to the point of wanting to dry heave, but the P90X really allowed me to stretch my self. The first month I went with a standard mix of Creatine* + Protien a couple of times a day and mixed with fruit punch for my recovery drink, but I found that I really needed a lot of electrolyte replacement as well. I was feeling very sick (just completely exhausted) after my workouts and I had to drive over to the corner store to pickup a gatorade/powerade before I would start feeling good again. That really started to change my opinions about the need for a purchasing a recovery drink that focused on post workout recovery.

I purchased the P90X Results and Recovery formula during my second month of the P90X workouts and when I got exhausted it really made a huge difference in the 20 minutes directly after the workout. It already has the Creatine, Protien, and electrolytes all ready to go for the second your done.

Now for the important questions... Was it worth buying? It depends. If you are just doing the workouts and getting slightly winded but not really pushing yourself to an extreme state of fatigue, you can get away without using a recovery drink. If you are pushing yourself as hard as you can, to the point of complete exhaustion then a recovery drink directly after a workout is mandetory, and this one works very effectively. I'm starting my third rotation of P90X and I use this after all of the really intense workouts, and my normal protien + fruit punch for all the other workouts. One tub usually lasts me about 2 months.

I gave it 4/5 stars because it does cost a little more, and you can get other brands that seem to do as well. You could use a creatine/protien blend and a good sports drink after every workout for the same results, although the over all price of doing that would probably be a little bit more than just getting a recovery drink that is specific for post workout recovery.

*Creatine Monohydrate is a dietary supplement that hydrates your muscles and aids in recovery. It is used by a large majority of athletes and body builders to aid in increasing how far you can push yourself in workout sets and minimizing the time between workouts. It is generally recommended to use it for 3 months and then to take a 2-3 month break.

** Several reviews were saying you get the same out of Chocolate Milk... You can't, period. There are specific suppliments in a recovery drink that are health industry known for helping in recovery. Ie.. Creatine, L-Arginine, and L-Glutamine. You can get all of these from other recovery drinks. But chocolate milk won't do it, even if it has similar calories to a recovery drink. It's not about the calories/fat/sugar, it's about everything else.

5Educate yourself by reading, not listening to people..
By D. Sitta
First off, when i stop to read reviews on a product, i like to read things that are incredibly in-depth so i know what it is i'm buying. I also like to know how something works, etc etc blah blah.TL;DR, i study what i use before i use it. I'm reading reviews where people talk about how drinking chocolate milk does the same exact thing. My best guess is those people are also 30 pounds overweight, and the best way they know to get carbs after a workout is angelfood cake. below, i'm going to quote the review i read that actually made me post.

This product is really garbage...hardly any protein per serving, tastes like crap, full of sugar and is WAY overpriced!! One guy in another review said the product gives his stomach cramps and diarrhea, it's no wonder...have you looked at the ingredients? It's a bunch of crap! Artificial ingredients, chemicals and Maltodextrin!! Maltodextrin is a cheap filler ingredient that food companies use to get you hooked on their product. It helps to mask the flavor because it is so bad. This additive is known to cause all sorts of digestive problems and disease. I do not recommend any of the P90X supplements but I do like the P90x workouts!

Other Ingredients: Glucose, Fructose, Whey Protein Concentrate, Maltodextrin, Citric
Acid, Natural and Artificial Flavors, Lecithin, L-Arginine, D-alpha Tocopheryl Acetate,
Creatine Monohydrate, L-Glutamine, Ascorbic Acid, Magnesium Oxide, Potassium
Phosphate, Sodium Chloride, Carrageenan, Niacinamide, Beta Carotene, Pyridoxine
Hydrochloride, Thiamine Mononitrate, Riboflavin, and Cyanocobalamin.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - First off, this product has the same amount of sugar used as in soda. The difference is that these sugars arent simple sugars like the ones in soda. Maltodextrin used to get you hooked?? maltodextrin is a starch (corn) polysaccharide, which gets broken down by the body INTO SUGAR. fructose is also a complex sugar, and glucose is the immediate *junk* sugar that your body can process immediately to balance out everything you lost, in a short time frame. creatine is actually naturally occurring, and is most readily absorbed into the body when in the monohydrate form (i forgot the other form, since i never needed to know anything but "use monohydrate") and helps rebuild your muscles after they've been worked out. Niacinamide is Niacin, better known as Vitamin B3. It helps the body metabolize fat cells. Thiamine mononitrate is more simply "Thiamin," and more commonly known as vitamin B1. Riboflavin is Vitamin B2, cyanocobalamin is one of the most common things of all, actually, and you probably know it as Vitamin B12. Beta Carotene is being listed as if its a bad thing? i guess carrots are bad then, along with Vitamin A. Carrageenan is actually extracted from seaweeds, and is the VEGETARIAN/VEGAN alternative to gelatin. aka- its the healthier thickening agent, and for all of those go-green vegans popping up nowadays, yes. it is not gelatin, and it comes from a plant. Pyridoxine is just Vitamin B6. Sodium Chloride goes back to 5th grade science folks. People freak out when they see chloride in their food, and somehow forget that NaCl (sodium chloride) is table salt. Its also something your body loses when you sweat, and is crucial to restore your electrolytes. L-Glutamine is part of the amino acids your body naturally produces when working out. D-alpha Tocopheryl Acetate is Vitamin E with antioxidants (i pray that readers know what that is)and is the most common thing found in european dietary supplements. It's also made of organic compounds. Lecithin is a massive conglomerate of things, but simply put- it is one of the main components of a portion of your cell membranes.

WHATS CAUSING THE STOMACH ISSUES?!?!? - Don't worry, thats the only thing i didnt explain that isn't common knowledge. Magnesium oxide is often used as an antacid, to relieve stomach soreness, heartburn, etc. Side effects of it include nausea, and cramping. In higher doses, it also acts as a short-term laxative. Like the majority of laxatives, having too much of this causes the nausea and cramping. Taken in a proper dose, you shouldn't even get the laxative part. Stool softener, yes. laxative, you took too much. Every chemical/substance affects everybody differently. If you're sensitive to it, or if you're a female/light weight male, odds are you're getting too much of this stuff which is whats causing you the pain. Alot of times, people will also put 3-4 scoops into their drink instead of the correct amount, labeled as 2. More of a good thing isn't always better. It's like the people who take 4 or 5 advils all at once instead of the "Maximum 2 in setting" because more advil HAS to be better, right? Those people are also completely oblivious that their over-the-counter medicine is incredibly strenuos on the liver, and can cause permanent damage by taking too much.

I don't know where the "chocolate milk does the same thing as this workout supplement" thoery came into play, but its definitely a wive's tale. The ONLY things this product and chocolate milk have in common, is vitamin b6, and vitamin C. even so- chocolate milk (nestle nesquick mix) contains miniscule amounts compared to this. Oh, also- they both have calories and sugar.

As much as i would like to depend on other people for information, try to limit the claims you believe unless they have scientific backing or its evident that research was done. and not "just read acesulfameisbad.com, and you'll know everything" because alot of the times- those sights are biased, and even funded by companies who don't use that product. I read the reviews to hear if it tasted good, if it helped with your soreness, and what were possible side effects/problems you experienced while using the product. The uneducated masses should not be writing reviews about how this product is bad for you when they can't even pronounce, let alone comprehend the function of, chemicals/substances in a product. i'm not sure of specifics, but i'm also pretty sure that things like this (dietary, health, etc) have to label everything in their product by its chemically correct name. Rather than seeing sodium, you see sodium chloride. rather than seeing vitamin b3, you see niacinamide.

If you took the time to read that massive brick wall i call a review, i hope it helped you understand more about this product, and hopefully you can apply this knowledge to products you purchase in the future.

3Over-priced upset stomach
By M. McMillan
Just as a preface to my review: The other reviews I've read here are all very positive, so I wanted to offer this bit of more negative information. So, I am seven weeks into P90X. The videos recommend this supplement after every workout. First, I do think there are nutritional benefits to using this recovery drink; however, I think they are overstated and not necessarily tied to this specific product. If you compare the protein and electrolyte content of the P90X Recovery drink to chocolate milk, you can see that they are pretty similar. Now, I'm not saying you should just chug chocolate milk after cardio or plyometrics, but it is one example of a much cheaper comparative product. Aside from the expensive cost ($60 for one month) of the P90X Recovery drink, I would also like to note that when I use the drink, I routinely suffer from an upset stomach (read: "killer diarrhea"). While this could just be me, I have spoken to other P90X participants who have similar digestive complaints. Aside from those two big drawbacks (it's over-priced and induces diarrhea), I do believe there are definite benefits to using this or other similar products. Also, it really does taste pretty good--like orange sherbet, and is a nice healthy treat after a hard workout.
